2019 Intensives

New for 2019–INTENSIVES!

What is an intensive?

Modeled on the format of the SCBWI national and international conferences, intensives are small class settings with one faculty member and a small group of students (no more than 22 at Middle of the Map) for an extended amount of time. This allows the faculty member to deep dive into the given topic. We have asked all our faculty to provide hands-on activities that will allow them to teach at a much deeper level than even our 90-minute break-out allows.

The small group settings also allow for more direct Q & A and for attendees to get a better feel for the faculty and what they are looking for in submissions.

What intensives are being offered in Kansas City in November? (and by who?)

Sarah Jane Abbott
If at First You Don’t Succeed, Revise, Revise Again: As a writer, sometimes you’ll have a character or a story you love, but the manuscript just isn’t working.  Instead of abandoning the idea, delve into intensive revisions! This workshop will provide tips and tricks for overhauling your picture book manuscript.  We’ll cover topics like strengthening character and plot and focusing the heart of the story, as well as various revision exercises like blind rewrites, changing the POV, making a dummy to check pacing, and more.

Quressa Robinson
Developmental Editing: Being Your Own Editor: A developmental edit looks at the structure and content of your book, and addresses issues with tone, audience, and character arcs. In this intensive, participants will learn how to do a developmental edit on their own work as well as that of their peers. Bring some samples of your work for in-class exercises.

Alyssa Eisner Henkin
THE Agent Intensive: In this 3-hour deep dive, Alyssa will walk you through everything you need to know about the query process. From query letters, to the dreaded synopsis, right on through to the hoped-for full manuscript request—this intensive will give you a behind the scenes look at what agents are thinking, what they want, and (most importantly) what they dislike.

When and where?

All intensives will take place at the Doubletree, Overland Park on Sunday, November 3rd, 2019 from 8:30am to 11:30am.

How do I register?

Register during conference registration much as you would register for a critique. Carefully select your intensive as it might not be possible for us to move you to a different session later. As all intensives run simultaniously, you can only register for ONE intensive.

What do I bring to my intensive?

An email will be sent to all participants with any directions from the faculty no less than 2 weeks before the conference date.

How much do intensives cost?

We are so pleased to be able to offer our intensives at a rate we believe will be competitive with any other conference you chose to attend.

Early-bird Member price: $55
General Registration: $60
Non-Members: $65
Intensive ONLY** (Available starting September 7, IF SPACE ALLOWS, members only):$90

What is the INTENSIVE ONLY option?

IF any spaces are still available at 9am September 7th, 2019, they will be offered as a stand alone ticket (no conference registration necessary) for $90. As registration will be offered first come, first served, there is NO guarantee that any spaces will still be available. If spaces are available, an email will be sent out by 7am on the 7th.
