Friday, Nov. 1: Manuscript critiques and portfolio reviews will be held Friday evening, Nov. 1, at the DOUBLETREE OVERLAND PARK (note: this is a NEW conference hotel). Join other conference attendees to “mix and mingle” in a reserved room at the Doubletree — 2019 THEME: (in honor of Halloween) VILLAINS!  

NEW! First-Time Attendee Orientation: Friday night, November 1st, Doubletree Hotel. 6:30pm:  Is this your first conference? Your first time at an SCBWI event? Or maybe just your first Middle of the Map? If you have any questions (even if they aren’t entirely conference related) bring them to this session to get a quick tour of what the conference, and SCBWI, has to offer. Then stick around for your critique or just to mingle at our mixer and meet other writers in your community!

Saturday, Nov. 2: The conference runs Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8:15 a.m – 5:30 p.m at the BEST Conference Center, University of Kansas Edwards Campus, 12600 Quivira Road, Overland Park, KS. The event ends with a reception and book signing with our faculty.

Saturday, Nov. 2:  BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Roundtable critiques! Free and open to all, the roundtable critiques will take place at the Doubletree Overland Park the evening of Saturday, Nov. 2nd starting at 7:30 p.m. Look at program information for Doubletree room information.

!NEW! Sunday, Nov. 3rd !NEW!FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER we are pleased to announce SUNDAY MORNING INTENSIVES! These 3-hour deep dive intensives (modeled on those available at the national level conferences) will take place at the Doubletree Overland Park on Sunday, Nov. 3rd from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. SPACE WILL BE STRICTLY LIMITED to no more than 22 attendees per session.

Early bird on-line registration opens at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019.  Only SCBWI members can register during the two weeks of early bird registration. General registration opens Saturday, August 31st at 9 a.m.. Registration closes Monday, October 28th, at 5 p.m. No onsite registration will be available. We are unable to refund payment if you are unable to attend. SCBWI members receive a discounted price for registration and critiques/portfolio reviews.

Manuscript / Portfolio Critiques (Members): $50

ALL Middle of the Map faculty will be doing critiques or portfolio reviews. However, this is still a limited number. The selection of a critique is personal and we leave that up to you. Please consider your selection carefully as we can rarely switch sessions due to demand.

If you an author illustrator, YES you can have your dummy critiques. Kelly Light and Jim Hoover are both happy to provide feedback on your dummy. On top of that, if you have a critique with someone else who reps/sells PB’s or writes PB’s, this is their area–use their expertise and bring your dummy!

*Manuscripts for critique are due September 28th by 5pm. Please submit your manuscript to ksmosubmissions@gmail.com with the following subject line and document title: FacultyLastName_Title_YourLastName. For example, if your name is Jane Doe and you are submitting a manuscript entitled Best Book Ever for critique with Alexandra Levick, you would title your document and the subject line of the email as follows: LEVICK_BestBookEver_Doe.  Manuscripts should be in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced, using standard manuscript formatting. You may submit the first ten pages of your novel with a one page synopsis (synopsis should be single-spaced) OR one full picture book manuscript.

If you have manuscript critique, a portfolio review, or dummy critique, you will be contacted as the conference nears with time and location information.

*Portfolios for review — if you so chose to send them early. You may prefer an off-the-cuff critique, in which case you do not need to send ahead of time–are due by October 11, 2019 by 5pm. Plese send them in an emailable form (such as thumbnails) to ksmosubmissions@gmail.com with the subject line: FacultyLastName__YourLastName.

You may pay by Paypal or check. Please choose the appropriate option in the “Pay With” option during registration. If you choose to pay by check, payment should be mailed within 48 hours of registration to:

BOOKSTORE INFORMATION:

If you are an SCBWI member attending the conference, we will be happy to stock your book in the conference bookstore and you may participate in the book signing at the closing reception. This opportunity is available to SCBWI members attending Middle of the Map only. Please watch emails for deadlines –they are early for all authors in order to ensure proper book ordering. Both PAL (traditionally published authors) and self-published authors may request ONE of their titles to be stocked in the bookstore. If you are interested in having your book in this year’s bookstore please email the TITLE and ISBN number to:

NOTE: due to unexpected circumstances, we are changing our bookstore provider. Due to this change, we will require a longer lead-in time for ordering. Please plan to have all titles and ISBN’s into the email by 5pm on Monday, September 16th.

There also will be titles by faculty authors / illustrators and titles suggested by faculty members available for purchase. There’s no better holiday gift than a personalized book!

HOTEL INFORMATION:
The hotel is the Doubletree Overland Park at 10100 College Blvd., Overland Park, KS 66210. The room rate will be $109 for a single room, and $119 for doubles, triples and quad room sharing. Each room will include breakfast buffet and complimentary parking. NOTE: this is a change of hotels for this year’s conference. The new hotel is closer to the KU Edwards Campus as well as better suited to our needs as a conference. For more information please see the hotel page

LUNCH:
A buffet salad / sandwich lunch is included in your registration fee. There is an option to request a vegetarian meal when you register for the conference. We’re sorry, but we are unable to accommodate most special dietary requests, but please let us know about outstanding allergies.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSIONS FOLLOWING THE CONFERENCE:

Conference attendees are allowed to submit one manuscript (or query for agents) to faculty members following the conference if your work fits the editor’s or agent’s guidelines. Specific submission guidelines for each faculty member will be provided in your conference packet at the event.
