Kansas/Missouri SCBWI is pleased to announce that our 2020 Illustration Mentor is the very talented Stephen Gilpin! 

About the Mentor: Stephen Gilpin    

Stephen Gilpin has been working professionally as an illustrator since 2001. He’s illustrated numerous picture books, chapter books, graphic novels and illustrations for a host of clients including Disney/Hyperion, Simon and Schuster, Harper, MacMillan, Scholastic and others. Over the last few years, he’s become passionate about telling stories with comics both as the writer and artist on the monthly comic page The Wacky Adventures of Pedro for Boys’ Life magazine and as a graphic novel illustrator. Recent projects include Wires and Nerve Volume 2: Gone Rogue and Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel (releasing 6/25/19).  He currently lives and works in Iola, Kansas.

The Application Process: 

Application for the Illustration Mentorship is open to any current Kansas/Missouri SCBWI member not yet published in children’s book illustration (editorial publication, etc. is acceptable). The winner will work with the mentor improving a single illustration over the course of the mentorship. The mentor will critique the illustration twice during an agreed upon timeline, not to exceed one year. The winner will also receive a scholarship covering registration cost to the Kansas/Missouri SCBWI Middle of the Map conference in 2018.

Cost: Free to SCBWI Kansas and Missouri members

When: We will begin accepting applications on June 1st. Please do not submit materials until this date.

Deadline to apply is June 30, 2019 by 12 midnight.

Register: Email Robin Schuberth at with the illustration you would like to work on with Stephen. Please read and follow these guidelines carefully in order for your submission to receive full consideration.

Submit a 350dpi .jpg of an 8” x 10” original illustration.

The illustration must be original, created by you.

Please submit your entry as an email attachment to Robin Schuberth at Submission files should be labeled with your name (eg: sam_doe.jpg).

Your email subject line MUST read: 2020 Illustration Mentorship.
