KSMO SCBWI welcomes Taylor Abatiell, Senior Designer at Penguin Workshop, and Heather Brockman Lee, Rocky Mountain SCBWI Illustrator Coordinator and published illustrator, to present topics for the Working Illustrator!

9 am- 9:55 am CST: Process of a Work In Progress with Taylor Abatiell
A detailed breakdown of the illustrator’s workflow and timeline during a children’s book project.
10:15-11:45 am CST: How to Develop an Illustrator Postcard with Taylor Abatiell (Hands-on Workshop)
“Promotional Materials Workshop” where participants brainstorm and sketch digital postcard imagery and Taylor provides additional guidance on reaching publishing professionals and agents. The goal of the Workshop is for participants to leave with a strong concept for one promotional card and a game plan for sending out the completed work for consideration.
11:45 am-12:30 pm CST: Lunch Break
12:30-2 pm CST: Traditional vs. Digital Media
Do you use one? Should you use the other? What if you did both? Heather Brockman Lee will offer guidance on how to discover your chosen medium(s) to elevate your work for your individual style and for each project. Bring your favorite mediums to show and if you want, bring extra to share!
2:15-3:10 CST: Finding Balance as an Illustrator with Heather Brockman Lee (Lecture + Q & A) .
Learn about ways to balance your illustration career, your life and your emotional well-being as you navigate the industry of freelance illustration for children.
All sessions will be recorded and available for 60 days.
A limited number of Portfolio reviews will be available for purchase for $75. This includes a filled out illustrator gold form and a 10 minute zoom session.

Note: A portfolio review includes a filled out Gold Form and a 10 minute zoom with the reviewer on Saturday August 13th only. Please note Taylor Abatiell will be doing zoom portfolio reviews beginning at 12:30 pm CST during Heather Brockman Lee’s presentations but attendees can return to the presentations or they can view the presentation later as a recording will be available for 60 days. Heather Brockman Lee’s Portfolio reviews will begin at 3:30 pm CST.

Once purchased, please submit portfolios for review as PDF or JPG to ksmosubmissions@gmail.com by July 30, 2022. Put the name of the reviewer_Yourlast name_PortfolioReview (example: Abatiell_Doe_PortfolioReview or Lee_Doe_PortfolioReview) in the subject line of the email. Files can be named with artistname_1.jpg, artistname_2.jpg, etc. in the order you want the portfolio to be viewed.
Taylor Abatiell
Taylor Abatiell is a New York based Senior Designer at Penguin Workshop, an imprint of Penguin Random House. She develops children’s books, middle grade novels, and licensed series. Her responsibilities include art directing illustrators, type and branding design, expanding on longstanding series such as Eric Carle and Mad Libs, and adapting licensed content to the children’s book market, such as Sonic and Mighty Express. Previous projects include Clyde the Hippo, Mother Goose to the Rescue, Kirkus starred Humpty Dumpty Lived Near a Wall, and the #1 NYT best-selling series Who HQ. She also specializes in inclusive art direction, and champions diverse creators and stories for underrepresented audiences.
Heather Brockman Lee
Heather Brockman Lee is an illustrator, storyteller, mentor, and professor of Illustration. You can see her work in her debut picture books, Hattie Hates Hugs by Sarah Hovorka with Beaming Books (out now!) and A Poem Grows Inside You by Katey Howes with The Innovation Press (fall of 2022), as well as in issues of Ladybug and Babybug magazines. She was a Grand Prize winner of the SCBWI Big Five-oh! Portfolio Showcase in 2021 and the 2020 Letters and Lines Portfolio Showcase at the Rocky Mountain chapter of SCBWI. AS if that weren’t enough to keep her busy, she is also the Illustrator Coordinator for the RMC SCBWI region and is working on her licensing portfolio and art for her next book, She is Mama with Simon and Schuster (Spring 2023).
