ART DIRECTOR DAY: An Online Illustrator Event!

Activities include a Webinar +  Portfolio Critique Opportunity from two art directors.

One from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and one from Lee and Low Books. 


The webinar portion of our event will feature two topics presented by associate art director Véronique Lefèvre Sweet from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.


Véronique Lefèvre Sweet


Véronique Lefèvre Sweet is Associate Art Director in the picture book team at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. She was born and raised in France and has been working in publishing in New York City for nearly 16 years. She has art directed and designed a large variety of books from fiction to non-fiction picture books, chapter books, and middle grade, and has been fortunate to work with talented authors and artists including John Rocco, Marc Brown, Liz Climo, Tom Lichtenheld, Obert Skye, David McPhail, and Zachariah Ohora, among others. She loves collaborating with artists and discovering new talent.


Ashley Halsey


Ashley Halsey grew up on a farm in Connecticut, and after college moved to New York City to begin her career in publishing. She first worked on the interior design of cookbooks and lifestyle books at HarperCollins and then as a designer at Macmillan Children’s. She left New York in 2014 and moved to Portland, Maine. There, she started work as an art director at a local calendar and greeting card publisher, Sellers Publishing. In addition to her full-time work, Ashley works as a freelance illustrator, designer and art director. Ashley has had her illustrations published in books and magazines and art directs picture books for Lee & Low Books. She has illustrated and designed a number of books, the most recent of which is the picture book Find a Moose With Me!. Find her work online at

There are two sessions available for just $10 with your registration.


  • From Concept to Dummy: How to Take Your Picture Book to the Next Level

In this presentation, associate art director Véronique Lefèvre Sweet will give an overview of what makes a great picture book, from details to the whole project. She will explore rhythm, visual storytelling, and the various stages of creating a book. Additionally, she will discuss common mistakes and how to fix them.


  • Behind the Scenes: An Overview of Working with the Publisher’s Art Department

In this presentation, you will learn how the art department works, and how to work with the art department. We’ll talk about what publishers look for, how artists are selected for a project, and what the art director’s expectations are. We will outline the design and production schedule and workflow, from sketches, to finished art and proofs.


Portfolio Reviews with an Art Director


There are portfolio review consultations available from Véronique Lefèvre Sweet from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and Ashley P. Halsey from Lee & Low Books.  Portfolio critiques are $50 each at registration.

1. Submit a 72 dpi .jpg each of no more than ten (10) images of your work.

2. The illustrations must be original, created by you.

5. Your email subject line MUST read: 2021 Illustrator Sweet Portfolio Review.

The webinar costs $10 for SCBWI members, $20 for non-members. SCBWI members, login to get the discounted price.
