Beating the Odds
A Look at Writing Poetry that Editors will Love
(with a focus on rhyming poetry and picture books in verse)

You’ve hear all the warnings – DON’T submit a rhyming picture book! But the book stores and libraries are full of them.

The truth is editors love rhyming books that are GOOD! With help from master poet and picture books author, Peggy Archer you can learn how to write poetry that editors will love. During this all-day workshop you will take a look at how language, rhythm and imagery combine to create an emotional experience. Then practice writing the perfect rhyme that will make editors come knocking at your door.

Bring the first 8 lines of a rhyming poem or picture book in verse, pen or pencil, a highlighter, and writing paper.  And be ready to work!

peggy2PEGGY ARCHER's picture book in verse Toad in the Road (Schwartz & Wade, Spring 2018) won the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators Work-in-Progress Award for best picture book text in 2015. Her picture book poetry collections include Name That Dog! Puppy Poems from A to Z (Dial 2010), and From Dawn to Dreams, Poems for Busy Babies (Candlewick 2006). Her board books written in verse include Find It at Bedtime and Find It at the Construction Site (Highlights Press 2016), and A Day at the Zoo and Wheels Go ‘Round (Highlights Let’s Grow book club 2015). Her poems have also appeared in BabyBug, LadyBug, and Turtle magazines for children.
